What is HostView?

HostView is an end-host measuring tool to collect network performance data annotated with users' perceived quality of the network. Traces collected with HostView will be invaluable for us to design algorithms that automatically diagnose performance problems in individual applications as perceived by end-users. We need data from end-users to answer the following types of questions:

  1. Why is my laptop so sluggish?

  2. Is the performance problem caused by the network connection? A particular mix of active processes? Protocol behaviors?

  3. At what level of performance degradation does the user start to care?

HostView displays in real-time which applications are currently using your connection and how much throughput they are consuming. It also gives you the maximum throughput achieved on your machine since running HostView.
